After dominating movie and television production for three-quarters of a century, California saw its lock on location filming and even post-production begin to erode in the 1980s. It was not that the state had lost its luster with filmmakers, but that other states and foreign countries began offering financial incentives so alluring that it became more cost-effective to film elsewhere, even when it meant shipping casts, crews and equipment to distant locations.
